đ The Pros and Cons of Full-Time Travel - Smiths On Tour Style!
Full-time family travel isnât always easyâor perfect. Itâs messy, unpredictable, and full of challenges, but itâs also incredibly rewarding. Since leaving the UK in January, our digital nomad familyâjust the three of us, with our teenage daughter Tillyâhas experienced moments of wonder, frustration, laughter, and reflection.
Weâve learned that traveling full-time with a teenager brings unique challenges: moving constantly, navigating different expectations, and finding balance as a family. But alongside the struggles, there are moments of connection, creativity, and discovery that make it all worth it.
Here are 17 honest pros and cons of full-time travel with a teenager, told from our perspective on the road.
1ď¸âŁ Packing, Repacking & Living Out of a Suitcase đ§ł
Con: Living out of a suitcase sounds freeingâuntil youâre unpacking for the tenth time in a humid hostel. Tilly canât find her charger, Joeâs bag wonât zip, and suddenly âminimalist travelâ feels anything but minimal.
Pro: But long-term travel with a teen has taught us what really matters. Happiness isnât stuffâitâs experiences. Packing light makes every adventure easier and reminds us that less can truly be more.
2ď¸âŁ Motivating Everyone to Keep Moving âď¸
Con: Convincing a teenager to leave a comfortable Airbnb for another long bus ride can be a challenge. And honestly? Some days, I donât feel like moving either.
Pro: But when Tillyâs face lights up at fireflies in Costa Rica or a sunset hike in Thailand, I remember why weâre doing thisâfamily travel adventures bond us like nothing else.
3ď¸âŁ Tight Spaces & Room Sharing đ¨
Con: Tillyâs older now, and sharing a single room isnât comfortable anymore. Two rooms have become essential, even though Airbnb or hostel prices skyrocket.
Pro: Space gives us all breathing room. When we come back together after a little privacy, our family time feels sweeter and more intentional.
4ď¸âŁ Financial Worries đ¸
Con: We left our jobs and invested everything into our family travel YouTube channel and social media collaborations. Watching our savings shrink can feel scary.
Pro: But weâre teaching Tilly what courage looks likeâtaking risks for what matters, trusting in ourselves, and believing in our dreams.
5ď¸âŁ Different Expectations for Destinations đ´
Con: We all have different visions for the perfect stop. Iâm an early riser, Tilly and Joe are night owls. She wants vibrant cities; I crave quiet nature.
Pro: Compromise has led us to unexpected gemsâa sleepy fishing village or bustling street market weâd never have chosen on our own.
6ď¸âŁ The Challenge of Compromise đ¤
Con: Traveling full-time as a family means you canât always get your way. Sometimes that means skipping a hike or eating pizza (again) because thatâs what Tilly wants.
Pro: But seeing her joy in those small choices makes the sacrifices worth it. Shared memories always trump personal checklists.
7ď¸âŁ Accommodation Surprises đ
Con: Weâve had noisy neighbors, broken appliances, and neighborhoods that didnât feel safe. Moving quickly doesnât leave time for scouting.
Pro: Those hiccups have made us resilient. And when we land the perfect spotâpeaceful, clean, with a breathtaking viewâwe savor it deeply.
8ď¸âŁ Planning While Enjoying the Moment đ
Con: Itâs hard to plan the next leg of your long-term family travel while sitting on a gorgeous beach. The guilt of not being âpresentâ is real.
Pro: But those planning days often lead to the most magical discoveriesâlike a hidden waterfall hike or a local festival weâd never have found otherwise.
9ď¸âŁ Missing Connections & Community đĽ
Con: Building friendships takes time, and by the time weâve found our groove in a new place, itâs often time to leave. Tilly feels this tooâitâs tough as a teen.
Pro: We cherish the fleeting connections we make and stay in touch across continents. Every reunion feels like a small miracle.
đ Time Zones & Wi-Fi Woes đ
Con: Staying close to home and to Teegan (our daughter in the UK) can be challenging with a seven-hour time difference. Slow Wi-Fi can make uploading or calls stressful.
Pro: But those âno-techâ moments often turn into unexpected magicâboard games, stargazing, or deep conversations.
1ď¸âŁ1ď¸âŁ Down Days & Guilt đ
Con: Some days weâre too tired to explore, and guilt sets in: âWeâre spending all this money, shouldnât we be doing something epic?â
Pro: Realizing that full-time travel with a teen isnât a permanent vacationâitâs lifeâhas been freeing. Rest days make the big adventures even better.
1ď¸âŁ2ď¸âŁ Questioning Identity & Purpose đ
Con: Without our old routines or jobs, we started asking big questions: âWho are we now? What really matters?â It was scary at first.
Pro: On the other side came freedom: deeper family bonds, a clearer sense of purpose, and a new understanding of what âsuccessâ means to us.
1ď¸âŁ3ď¸âŁ Transport Chaos đ
Con: Traveling full-time means everything you own is on your back. Public transport can be chaoticâsome days weâve taken six different types of transport in one day.
Pro: But those wild travel days? Theyâre the stories weâll laugh about foreverâthe memories that glue our family together.
1ď¸âŁ4ď¸âŁ Grocery Store Challenges đ
Con: In some places, finding fresh ingredients is a trial-and-error process. Just when we find a great supermarket, itâs time to move on.
Pro: Itâs made us creative cooks and more grateful for every good meal.
1ď¸âŁ5ď¸âŁ Visa Limitations đ
Con: Just as we fall in love with a place, our visa runs out. Border runs or extensions can be stressful.
Pro: But visa limits push us to explore more widelyâturning frustration into discovery.
1ď¸âŁ6ď¸âŁ The Emotional Waves â¨
Con: Lows can hit unexpectedlyâmissed buses, homesickness, or simply exhaustion.
Pro: But then something incredible happens: a stingray glides by, an unexpected collab arrives, or we catch a beautiful family moment that reminds us why full-time family travel with a teenager is worth it.
1ď¸âŁ7ď¸âŁ Creative Projects on the Road đ¨
Con: Weâre all creative people, and now that weâre world schooling Tilly, hands-on projects like clay throwing, painting, jewelry making, and crafting are a huge part of our lives. The challenge? We canât always carry what we make while moving between destinations. Leaving projects behindâeven when we donate themâfeels bittersweet.
Pro: Despite the challenges, creating on the road has taught us to be resourceful and present. Each time Tilly paints a small masterpiece or we craft something together, it reminds us that the joy of creativity isnât in keeping the objectâitâs in the experience, the process, and the memories we make as a family.
Why We Still Choose This Life đ
Life comes in waves, and we are just riding them whilst travelling full-time. Weâve had to compromise, sacrifice hobbies we love, and sacrifice seeing loved ones to do thisâbut deep down, we know itâs the right thing for us as a family. We are explorers and adventurers, and weâre starting to really understand that life has strugglesâand thatâs okay. Itâs also okay to express emotions (not like we were told in the western world to âbe strongâ and not cry)âitâs all healthy.
I do feel full-time travel has already changed usâitâs made us stronger in different ways, softened our edges, created space for creativity and bonding, and opened our eyes beyond a closed-box way of thinking. We canât wait to keep going on this journey through the highs and lows.
To any families out thereâespecially those considering traveling full-time with a teenagerâtravel is a beautiful thing. You donât have to stay stuck in a negative routine or a daily grind that brings no joy or meaning. Live a wholesome lifeâwith no regrets!
And of course, we just need to convince our eldestâTeeganâto come out and spend some time exploring with us as well!
