š The Pros and Cons of Full-Time Travel - Smiths On Tour Style!
Full-time family travel isnāt always easyāor perfect. Itās messy, unpredictable, and full of challenges, but itās also incredibly rewarding. Since leaving the UK in January, our digital nomad familyājust the three of us, with our teenage daughter Tillyāhas experienced moments of wonder, frustration, laughter, and reflection.
Weāve learned that traveling full-time with a teenager brings unique challenges: moving constantly, navigating different expectations, and finding balance as a family. But alongside the struggles, there are moments of connection, creativity, and discovery that make it all worth it.
Here are 17 honest pros and cons of full-time travel with a teenager, told from our perspective on the road.
1ļøā£ Packing, Repacking & Living Out of a Suitcase š§³
Con: Living out of a suitcase sounds freeingāuntil youāre unpacking for the tenth time in a humid hostel. Tilly canāt find her charger, Joeās bag wonāt zip, and suddenly āminimalist travelā feels anything but minimal.
Pro: But long-term travel with a teen has taught us what really matters. Happiness isnāt stuffāitās experiences. Packing light makes every adventure easier and reminds us that less can truly be more.
2ļøā£ Motivating Everyone to Keep Moving āļø
Con: Convincing a teenager to leave a comfortable Airbnb for another long bus ride can be a challenge. And honestly? Some days, I donāt feel like moving either.
Pro: But when Tillyās face lights up at fireflies in Costa Rica or a sunset hike in Thailand, I remember why weāre doing thisāfamily travel adventures bond us like nothing else.
3ļøā£ Tight Spaces & Room Sharing šØ
Con: Tillyās older now, and sharing a single room isnāt comfortable anymore. Two rooms have become essential, even though Airbnb or hostel prices skyrocket.

4ļøā£ Financial Worries šø
Con: We left our jobs and invested everything into our family travel YouTube channel and social media collaborations. Watching our savings shrink can feel scary.

5ļøā£ Different Expectations for Destinations š“
Con: We all have different visions for the perfect stop. Iām an early riser, Tilly and Joe are night owls. She wants vibrant cities; I crave quiet nature.
Pro: Compromise has led us to unexpected gemsāa sleepy fishing village or bustling street market weād never have chosen on our own.
6ļøā£ The Challenge of Compromise š¤
Con: Traveling full-time as a family means you canāt always get your way. Sometimes that means skipping a hike or eating pizza (again) because thatās what Tilly wants.

7ļøā£ Accommodation Surprises š

Why We Still Choose This Life š
Life comes in waves, and we are just riding them whilst travelling full-time. Weāve had to compromise, sacrifice hobbies we love, and sacrifice seeing loved ones to do thisābut deep down, we know itās the right thing for us as a family. We are explorers and adventurers, and weāre starting to really understand that life has strugglesāand thatās okay. Itās also okay to express emotions (not like we were told in the western world to ābe strongā and not cry)āitās all healthy.
I do feel full-time travel has already changed usāitās made us stronger in different ways, softened our edges, created space for creativity and bonding, and opened our eyes beyond a closed-box way of thinking. We canāt wait to keep going on this journey through the highs and lows.
To any families out thereāespecially those considering traveling full-time with a teenagerātravel is a beautiful thing. You donāt have to stay stuck in a negative routine or a daily grind that brings no joy or meaning. Live a wholesome lifeāwith no regrets!
And of course, we just need to convince our eldestāTeeganāto come out and spend some time exploring with us as well!
